The Manifestation of the Unconscious in Everyday Life and Culture
For Jung, the living psyche manifests not only inwardly, but outwardly, in the things we say and do. This lecture/seminar series will investigate three different areas where the unconscious can be shown to manifest: graffiti, the tattoo, and the comic book. Jung’s concepts will assist us in recognizing the manifestations of the unconscious in everyday life and culture, and will deepen our understanding of the nature of the living psyche.

Graffiti
As a cultural phenomenon graffiti is fascinating on various levels. Business and community leaders are constantly challenged to formulate action plans to deal with the writings and drawings that are left in the night on the buildings and properties of their community. This seminar, using Jung’s concepts for understanding manifestations of the psyche, will primarily focus on providing a psychological perspective of the phenomenon. My study of graffiti has led me to the hypothesis that what is often manifested in these drawings is psychological gold emanating from the deepest recesses of the psyche – the Self. The seminar will outline the thinking process that has led to this hypothesis by commenting on a number of slides of graffiti drawings.

The Skin and The Psyche
An investigation of the relationship between the skin and the psyche. Clinical case material will be utilized by the seminar leader as illustration. In addition, the world of the tattoo will be explored as a compelling example of this strong and pervasive connection.

Manifestations of the Unconscious in Comic Books
Historically, the comic book, like the fairy tale, has been viewed as a form of children’s literature. For the depth psychologist, both genres are reservoirs of archetypal material, the exploration of which increases our understanding of the structure and dynamics of the psyche. The lecture/seminar will explore the narrative and graphic illustrations of a wide range of comic book themes and characters, shedding light on the relationship between the ego and the unconscious.

Dream Interpretation
Dream interpretation is an art as well as a science.How does one approach a dream? What is it’s purpose? These and other questions will be addressed in this introductory dream seminar, the focus of which is Jung’s understanding and approach to dreams. Dream material to be supplied by the seminar leader.
